How Does MRI Scan Work?

MRI is a completely painless process. Here's what happens step by step during your scan:

1

Magnetic Field Created

The MRI machine generates a powerful magnetic field around your body, aligning hydrogen atoms in your tissues.

2

Radio Waves Sent

Safe radio waves are pulsed through the body, causing the aligned atoms to produce signals.

3

Signals Detected

Sensors detect these signals, which differ depending on the type of tissue — bone, muscle, fluid, fat.

4

Detailed Images Created

A computer processes the signals to create sharp, 3D images used by radiologists to diagnose conditions.

No Radiation. Completely Safe.

Unlike X-Ray or CT Scan, MRI does not use any ionizing radiation. It is safe for most patients including pregnant women (with doctor's advice) and children. There are no known long-term side effects of MRI scanning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We've answered the most common ones below.

Is MRI scan safe? Are there any risks?
+
Yes, MRI is considered one of the safest imaging techniques available. It does not use radiation. Most people can have an MRI without any risk. However, patients with certain metal implants (pacemakers, cochlear implants), metal clips, or certain tattoos may not be eligible. Our team will screen you thoroughly before the scan.
How long does an MRI scan take?
+
The duration depends on which part of the body is being scanned. A typical MRI takes between 20 to 60 minutes. Whole-body MRI or complex scans may take longer. You will be informed in advance about the expected time for your specific scan.
Does MRI scan hurt? Is it painful?
+
No, the MRI scan itself is completely painless. You will hear loud thumping and knocking sounds from the machine — this is normal. You'll be given earplugs or headphones. You just need to lie still. The scan is non-invasive and does not involve any injections unless contrast dye is required.
What is the cost of MRI scan in Ahmedabad?
+
MRI scan prices vary depending on the body part being scanned and whether contrast is needed. At Usmanpura Imaging Centre, we offer very competitive and transparent pricing. Brain MRI typically starts from ₹2,500–₹5,000. Please call or WhatsApp us for the exact current pricing for your specific scan.
Do I need a doctor's prescription for an MRI?
+
Yes, a doctor's referral is generally required for an MRI scan as it is a medical procedure that needs to be interpreted by a specialist. However, you can contact us and our team can guide you on the right scan for your symptoms and advise you on obtaining the right prescription.
When will I get my MRI report?
+
We offer same-day report delivery for most MRI scans. Reports are signed by our expert radiologists (MD Radiology) and can be collected in person, or sent via WhatsApp or email for your convenience.
Can I get an MRI if I'm claustrophobic?
+
Yes! We have wide-bore (large opening) MRI machines which are much more comfortable for claustrophobic patients. Our friendly technicians will also communicate with you throughout the scan to keep you comfortable. In some cases, sedation may be discussed with your doctor for severely claustrophobic patients.
What is the difference between MRI and CT scan?
+
Both are advanced imaging tools, but they work differently. CT scan uses X-rays (radiation) and is faster — good for bones, blood vessels, and emergency cases. MRI uses magnetic fields (no radiation) and is superior for soft tissues, brain, spinal cord, joints, and organs. Your doctor will recommend the right one based on your condition.
