How It Works

What is a CT Scan &
How Does It Work?

A CT scan uses X-rays taken from multiple angles and a computer to create detailed cross-sectional images of your body. Here's the science behind it:

1

X-Ray Rotation

The CT gantry rotates 360° around you, taking hundreds of X-ray images from different angles in seconds.

2

Data Collection

Detectors on the opposite side measure how much radiation passes through different tissues — bone, fat, muscle, fluid each absorb differently.

3

Computer Processing

Advanced software reconstructs the data into sharp, detailed 2D cross-sections and 3D models of your internal structures.

4

Expert Reporting

Our radiologist analyses the images and creates a comprehensive report, which is delivered to you the same day.

160-Slice Multi-Detector CT

Our state-of-the-art 160-slice CT scanner captures ultra-thin slices at high speed — giving exceptional image quality while minimising your radiation dose through our low-dose protocols.

Before Your Scan

How to Prepare for Your CT Scan

Follow these guidelines to ensure the safest and most accurate results. Our staff will guide you on your specific scan requirements.

Do's – What To Do

  • Arrive 15–20 minutes before your scheduled time
  • Bring your doctor's prescription and previous test reports
  • Inform staff about any allergies — especially iodine or contrast dye
  • Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Disclose all medications, especially Metformin (for diabetics) before contrast CT
  • Fast for 4–6 hours if a contrast CT scan is ordered
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing without metal zippers or buttons
  • Drink adequate water (unless fasting instructions given) to stay hydrated

Don'ts – What To Avoid

  • Do not eat or drink for 4–6 hours before a contrast CT (if instructed)
  • Avoid wearing jewellery, chains, earrings or hairpins into the scan room
  • Do not carry metal items — keys, belts, coins, or credit cards
  • Avoid applying body lotion or cosmetics on the scan day
  • Do not take Metformin 48 hours before and after a contrast CT (consult doctor)
  • Avoid moving during the scan — even slight movement can blur the images
  • Do not hide medical history from the technician — it affects your safety
  • Avoid breastfeeding for 24–48 hours after contrast injection (consult doctor)
Step by Step

What Happens During Your CT Scan?

The entire process is simple, quick, and comfortable. Here's exactly what to expect from start to finish.

1

Check-In & Verify

Present prescription at reception. Staff verifies your details and prepares your file.

2

Safety Screening

Complete a short questionnaire about allergies, implants, medications, and pregnancy status.

3

Prepare & Position

Remove metal objects, change if required. Lie on the CT table and the technician positions you correctly.

4

Scan (15–30 min)

The gantry rotates quietly. You'll be asked to hold your breath briefly for some scans. Stay still for clarity.

5

Report & Collect

Our radiologist reviews the images and your signed report is ready same day via WhatsApp, email, or in person.

Note for anxious patients: You will never be alone during the scan. Our technician communicates with you throughout via an intercom. The machine is open and spacious — nothing like an MRI tunnel. Most patients find it very comfortable and quick.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about CT Scan — answered simply and clearly.

Is CT scan safe? How much radiation does it involve?
+
CT scans use ionizing radiation (X-rays), but modern scanners use very low-dose protocols. The amount of radiation is carefully controlled and calibrated to the minimum needed for diagnostic quality. Our 160-slice CT uses advanced dose-reduction technology. The diagnostic benefit far outweighs the small radiation risk for recommended scans. Your doctor only recommends a CT when it is clinically necessary.
How long does a CT scan take?
+
The actual scanning time is very short — often just 5–30 seconds for the machine to complete a pass. However, total time at the centre including check-in, preparation, and scan is usually 20–45 minutes. Contrast CT scans may take slightly longer as contrast dye preparation and a waiting period is required. You will receive your report the same day.
Is CT scan painful? Are there any side effects?
+
The CT scan itself is completely painless. If a contrast dye injection is required, you may feel a brief warm sensation or a metallic taste in your mouth — this is normal and passes quickly. Rare allergic reactions to contrast dye can occur; our team is fully trained to handle these. After the scan, most patients resume normal activities immediately.
What is the cost of CT scan in Ahmedabad?
+
CT scan prices vary depending on the body part and whether contrast dye is used. At Usmanpura Imaging Centre, we offer very competitive and transparent pricing. A basic CT scan typically starts from ₹1,500 to ₹4,500. Contrast scans and complex studies like CTA may cost more. Please call or WhatsApp us for the exact current pricing for your specific prescribed scan.
Do I need a doctor's prescription for a CT scan?
+
Yes, a doctor's referral is required for CT scanning as it is a medical procedure involving radiation that must be clinically justified. If you don't have a prescription, please consult your doctor first. Our team can also help guide you to the right specialist if needed.
What is the difference between CT scan and MRI?
+
CT scans use X-rays and are faster, better for bones, blood vessels, chest, and emergency situations. MRI uses magnetic fields (no radiation) and provides superior soft-tissue detail — better for brain, spinal cord, joints, and organs. CT is generally quicker and less expensive. Your doctor will recommend the most appropriate scan based on your symptoms and condition.
When will I get my CT scan report?
+
We offer same-day report delivery for most CT scans. After your scan, our specialist radiologist analyses the images and prepares a signed report. Reports are delivered in person, via WhatsApp, or by email. For urgent cases, emergency reporting can be arranged — please inform the staff at the time of registration.
Can a CT scan detect cancer?
+
Yes, CT scans are one of the primary tools used for cancer detection, staging, and monitoring. They can detect tumours in the lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, lymph nodes, and other organs. CT is particularly effective for identifying whether cancer has spread (metastasis). However, a CT scan alone is not always definitive — it is often combined with biopsy or other tests for a confirmed diagnosis.
