About This Scan

What Is an MRI Cervical Spine Scan?

An MRI Cervical Spine scan provides detailed, high-resolution images of the seven cervical vertebrae (C1–C7), intervertebral discs, spinal cord, nerve roots, and surrounding soft tissues of your neck. It is the gold standard investigation for diagnosing most neck and upper limb neurological problems.

At Usmanpura Imaging Centre, our 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner delivers exceptional image quality without any radiation exposure — making it completely safe and repeatable. Our expert radiologists provide a comprehensive, signed report the same day, enabling your doctor to plan the best course of treatment without delay.

Whether you have chronic neck pain, arm weakness, pins and needles, or your doctor suspects a disc problem — an MRI cervical spine scan gives the clearest possible picture of what is happening inside your neck.

Highest Diagnostic Clarity

MRI is the most accurate tool for imaging soft tissue — discs, nerves, cord, ligaments and muscles in the neck.

Completely Safe – No Radiation

Uses only magnetic fields and radio waves — no X-rays involved. Safe for repeated scans if clinically needed.

Detects What X-Ray Misses

MRI clearly shows disc herniations, cord oedema, facet joint changes and nerve root compression invisible on X-ray.

Expert MD Radiologist Report

All scans reviewed and reported by specialist neuro/MSK radiologists — reliable, detailed and actionable.

The Cervical Spine (C1 – C7)

The neck region — 7 vertebrae supporting the head & protecting the spinal cord

C1
Atlas – C1
Supports the skull; allows nodding (yes motion). No vertebral body.
C2
Axis – C2
Has the odontoid process (dens); enables head rotation (no motion).
C3
C3 Vertebra
Provides neck flexion and extension; protects C3 nerve root.
C4
C4 Vertebra
C4 nerve controls the diaphragm; disc herniation here can cause shoulder pain.
C5
C5 Vertebra
Most common level for disc herniation; affects deltoid and bicep function.
C6
C6 Vertebra
C6 compression causes thumb and index finger numbness; very common site.
C7
C7 Vertebra
Largest cervical vertebra (prominent bump at base of neck); C7 root supplies triceps.
Anatomy

Understanding Your Cervical Spine

Your cervical spine (neck) consists of 7 vertebrae (C1–C7) that form the uppermost part of the spine. It supports the weight of your head (~5 kg), protects the spinal cord, and allows a wide range of head movement.

Between each vertebra sits a soft intervertebral disc that acts as a shock absorber. Nerve roots branch off the spinal cord at each level, supplying sensation and movement to the arms, shoulders and hands.

What MRI shows in the cervical spine:

1
Vertebral bone structure and alignment (C1–C7)
2
Intervertebral disc height, signal and herniation
3
Spinal cord signal, size and any compression
4
Nerve root impingement and foraminal narrowing
5
Ligaments (PLL, ALL, ligamentum flavum) thickening
6
Facet joint arthropathy and osteophyte formation
7
Paraspinal muscles and soft tissue abnormalities
What We Detect

Conditions Diagnosed by MRI Cervical Spine

MRI Cervical Spine is the most sensitive imaging tool for diagnosing the full spectrum of neck and cervical spine disorders.

Cervical Disc Herniation

Detects bulging or herniated discs (C3–C7) pressing on the spinal cord or nerve roots — causing neck pain, arm pain and weakness.

Very Common

Cervical Spondylosis

Age-related degeneration with osteophytes (bone spurs), disc space narrowing and facet joint arthropathy causing chronic neck pain and stiffness.

Degenerative

Cervical Spinal Stenosis

Narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses the cord — causing myelopathy with hand clumsiness, gait disturbance and weakness.

Needs Attention

Cervical Radiculopathy

Pinched nerve root causing radiating pain, numbness, tingling or weakness travelling from the neck into the shoulder, arm or hand.

Common

Cervical Myelopathy

Spinal cord dysfunction due to compression — characterised by progressive weakness, spasticity, and loss of fine motor skills.

Urgent

Cervical Fracture / Trauma

Post-injury evaluation for vertebral fractures, ligamentous injury, cord contusion and epidural haematoma not visible on X-ray or CT.

Post-Trauma

Cervical Tumours

Identifies primary spinal tumours, metastatic deposits, meningiomas and nerve sheath tumours compressing the cord or roots.

Screening

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Lesions

Detects demyelinating plaques in the cervical cord — a key diagnostic indicator and monitoring tool for MS and other demyelinating diseases.

Neurological

Cervical Cord Compression & OPLL

Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament (OPLL), cord oedema, and syringomyelia — rare but serious conditions clearly shown on MRI.

Benefits

Why MRI Is the Best Choice for Cervical Spine

No other imaging modality gives the same level of soft-tissue detail for the neck and spinal cord as MRI.

Unmatched Soft-Tissue Detail

Shows discs, cord, nerves and ligaments with clarity that CT and X-Ray cannot match.

Zero Radiation Exposure

Completely safe — no X-ray radiation. Ideal for repeat monitoring of chronic conditions.

Guides Treatment Precisely

Results directly guide surgical planning, physiotherapy and pain management decisions.

Early Detection of Serious Disease

Catches myelopathy, MS plaques and tumours early — when intervention is most effective.

Before Your Scan

How to Prepare for MRI Cervical Spine

The scan requires minimal preparation. Follow these simple guidelines to ensure a safe and accurate result.

Do's – What To Do

  • Arrive 15 minutes early and bring your doctor's referral letter
  • Bring any previous MRI, X-ray or CT reports of the neck for comparison
  • Inform staff about any metal implants — plates, screws, pacemaker, cochlear implant
  • Tell the team if you have ever had spinal surgery or any metal device in your neck
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal buttons, zippers or underwire
  • Inform staff if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or may be pregnant
  • Disclose any claustrophobia — our wide-bore scanner minimises discomfort
  • Follow fasting instructions only if contrast MRI (gadolinium) has been prescribed

Don'ts – What To Avoid

  • Do not carry any metal objects — keys, coins, belt buckle, hair pins into the MRI room
  • Remove all jewellery, necklaces, earrings and watches before the scan
  • Do not wear clothing with metallic threading, zips or decorative metal
  • Do not bring mobile phones, credit cards or electronic devices inside the scan room
  • Avoid moving your neck or head during the scan — it blurs the images
  • Do not eat or drink if gadolinium contrast has been prescribed (fast 4–6 hrs)
  • Do not hide history of metallic implants from the radiographer — it is a safety risk
  • Avoid applying hair gel, creams or make-up with metallic particles before the scan
Note on Contrast MRI (Gadolinium): In some cases, your doctor may request an MRI with contrast dye (gadolinium) to better visualise tumours, inflammation or vascular structures. This involves a small IV injection. Please inform our team of any kidney problems or previous contrast reactions before the appointment.
Step by Step

What Happens During the Scan?

The process is straightforward, comfortable and takes 25–40 minutes. Here's exactly what to expect.

1

Check-In & Registration

Present prescription at reception. Staff prepares your file and safety questionnaire.

2

Safety Screening

Complete a metal / implant safety checklist. Staff checks for contraindications.

3

Position & Set Up

Remove metal, change if needed. Lie on the table with your neck in the dedicated cervical coil.

4

The MRI Scan (25–40 min)

Stay very still. The machine is loud — earplugs are provided. The technician monitors you throughout via intercom.

5

Report & Collect

Radiologist reviews images. Signed report ready same day via WhatsApp, email or in person.

For claustrophobic patients: The cervical spine MRI coil positions your neck inside the scanner opening — the rest of your body remains mostly outside, which many patients find much more comfortable than a brain MRI. Tell our team if you have anxiety and we'll ensure you are fully comfortable before starting.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about MRI Cervical Spine scan — answered clearly and simply.

Is MRI Cervical Spine safe? Does it involve radiation?
+
Yes, MRI is completely safe. It uses magnetic fields and radio waves — not X-rays — so there is zero ionizing radiation. It can be performed safely on most patients, including those who need repeated monitoring. The only contraindications relate to metallic implants such as certain pacemakers or cochlear implants — which our team will screen for before your scan.
How long does an MRI Cervical Spine scan take?
+
The actual scan takes 25 to 40 minutes, depending on whether a plain or contrast study is required and how many sequences are taken. Including check-in and preparation, plan for about 45–60 minutes at the centre. You'll be told the estimated duration when booking.
What is the cost of MRI Cervical Spine in Ahmedabad?
+
At Usmanpura Imaging Centre, MRI Cervical Spine prices start from ₹2,500 (plain scan). With contrast, or if a whole spine screening is included, the cost may be slightly higher. Please call or WhatsApp us with your exact prescription for a precise quote. We are significantly more affordable than most hospitals and corporate imaging chains.
Is the MRI scan painful? What does it feel like?
+
The MRI scan is completely painless. You will lie on a table with a specially designed cervical coil placed around your neck area. You will hear loud knocking and buzzing sounds — this is the machine working and is completely normal. You will be given earplugs or headphones. The hardest part is simply lying still. Most patients find it manageable and some even fall asleep.
Can MRI detect a slipped disc or cervical spondylosis?
+
Yes — MRI is the best and most sensitive investigation for both conditions. It clearly shows the degree of disc bulge or herniation, the level of nerve root or cord compression, the severity of spondylotic changes (bone spurs, disc degeneration), and the effect on surrounding tissues. It gives your doctor all the information needed to decide between conservative treatment and surgery.
I have a metal implant in my neck/back — can I still have a cervical MRI?
+
It depends on the type of implant. Most modern orthopaedic implants (titanium screws, rods) are MRI conditional or safe. However, some older implants, pacemakers, and cochlear implants may be contraindicated. Please inform our team before booking and bring the implant card or manufacturer details — we will check compatibility before proceeding.
When will I receive my MRI Cervical Spine report?
+
We deliver reports the same day for most MRI scans. Your scan images are reviewed by our specialist radiologist and a comprehensive, written report is prepared. You can collect it in person, or receive it digitally via WhatsApp or email — whichever is most convenient. Urgent cases can be expedited — please inform the staff at registration.
What is the difference between MRI Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar spine?
+
The spine is divided into three main sections: Cervical (neck, C1–C7), Thoracic (mid-back, T1–T12) and Lumbar (lower back, L1–L5). Each section is scanned separately unless a whole-spine study is ordered. Cervical MRI focuses on neck pain, arm symptoms and cord pathology. Lumbar MRI is for lower back pain and leg symptoms. Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate region based on your symptoms.
