What KUB Stands For
KUB stands for Kidneys, Ureters, and Bladder — the three key organs of the urinary tract. A CT KUB scan produces detailed cross-sectional images of all three structures using X-rays processed by a computer, enabling detection of stones, blockages, infections, tumours, and structural abnormalities throughout the entire urinary system.
How It Works
The CT scanner rotates 360° around your abdomen and pelvis, capturing hundreds of X-ray images at different angles. Detectors measure how radiation passes through kidney tissue, stones, fluid, and soft tissue — each with a different density. A computer reconstructs these measurements into sharp 2D cross-sections, allowing your radiologist to identify even tiny 1–2mm kidney stones with precision.
Why CT KUB Over Ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a good first-line test but misses up to 50% of ureteric stones and cannot reliably evaluate the mid-ureter.
