Understanding the Scan

What is a CT Abdomen Scan?

A CT (Computed Tomography) Abdomen Scan is a rapid, advanced imaging procedure that uses X-rays and sophisticated computer algorithms to produce detailed cross-sectional (axial), coronal, and sagittal images of all organs within the abdominal cavity – from the diaphragm down to the hip bones.

Unlike a standard X-ray that produces a single flat image, CT captures hundreds of thin slices through the body simultaneously. Our 128-slice CT scanner acquires images at sub-millimetre resolution, enabling the radiologist to examine every structure in extraordinary detail and reconstruct true 3D images of organs and vessels.

Contrast dye (iodinated contrast) is often administered intravenously to enhance visualization of blood vessels, liver lesions, tumors, and inflammatory changes. A CT Abdomen Scan is the investigation of choice for abdominal emergencies, suspected malignancies, vascular conditions, and trauma assessment.

⚙️ How Does It Work?

1

You lie on a motorized table that slides through the CT scanner ring (gantry)

2

The X-ray tube and detectors rotate rapidly around you at 128 simultaneous detector rows

3

You are asked to hold your breath for 5–10 seconds during image acquisition

4

A computer reconstructs thousands of X-ray measurements into high-resolution cross-sections

5

Radiologist reviews axial, coronal, sagittal, and 3D reformatted images for diagnosis

Before Your Scan

How to Prepare for CT Abdomen Scan

Follow these instructions carefully for the clearest, most accurate scan results and to ensure your safety.

✅ Do's

  • Fast for 4–6 hours before the scan if contrast dye is being used (water is permitted)
  • Drink 2–3 glasses of plain water 1–2 hours before the scan to ensure adequate hydration
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal zippers, hooks, or fasteners
  • Bring your doctor's referral letter, previous scan reports, and any recent blood test results
  • Inform our staff of any kidney disease, diabetes, or thyroid conditions before contrast administration
  • Declare all known drug allergies, especially if you have had a contrast dye reaction before
  • Continue prescribed medications with a small sip of water unless specifically told otherwise
  • Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment for registration and preparation

❌ Don'ts

  • Do not eat solid food for 4–6 hours before a contrast CT scan
  • Do not take Metformin (diabetes medication) on the day of and 48 hours after contrast CT – consult your doctor
  • Do not wear jewelry, belts, underwired bras, or clothing with metallic elements
  • Do not withhold information about kidney problems – contrast dye can affect kidney function
  • Do not take oral contrast (barium) if specifically instructed not to for your scan type
  • Do not move or breathe during the scan when instructed to hold your breath
  • Do not ignore signs of contrast allergy during or after the scan (rash, difficulty breathing – tell staff immediately)
Step-by-Step Process

CT Abdomen Scan Procedure

From the moment you arrive to the time your report is delivered – here's what to expect.

1

Registration & Pre-Scan Check-in

Our front desk team registers your details and verifies your referral and ID. You'll be asked about allergies, kidney function, diabetes medications, and pregnancy status. This typically takes 5–10 minutes and ensures your scan is performed safely and appropriately.

2

Changing & IV Cannula Placement

You'll be provided a gown if required. For contrast CT scans, our trained nurse places a small IV cannula (usually in the arm vein) for contrast dye injection. The cannula is thin, and discomfort is minimal. You can ask questions at this point – our team is happy to reassure you.

3

Positioning on the CT Table

You'll lie flat on your back on the comfortable, padded CT table with arms typically raised above your head (to reduce artifact). Our technician ensures you are correctly positioned and comfortable. Supportive cushions or straps may be used if needed.

4

Contrast Injection (if required)

For most abdominal CT scans, iodinated contrast dye is injected rapidly via the IV cannula using an automatic injector. You may feel a warm, flushing sensation throughout your body and a brief metallic taste in your mouth – this is completely normal and passes within 30–60 seconds.

5

The CT Scan – Breath-Hold & Imaging

The table smoothly slides through the CT gantry ring. An automated voice will instruct you to "breathe in, breathe out, and hold your breath." The actual scan takes only 5–10 seconds per phase. Multiple phases (pre-contrast, arterial, venous, delayed) may be acquired depending on your clinical indication. You remain fully conscious throughout.

6

Post-Scan Care & Report Delivery

After the scan, the cannula is removed and you can resume normal activities immediately. If contrast was given, we recommend drinking extra water to help flush it from your system. A senior abdominal radiologist analyzes your images and prepares a detailed written report same day – delivered via WhatsApp, email, or in print from any branch.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about CT Abdomen Scan at Usmanpura Imaging Centre.

CT Abdomen Scan uses ionizing X-ray radiation, but the dose is carefully controlled and minimized using modern dose-reduction technologies such as Automatic Tube Current Modulation (ATCM) on our 128-slice scanner. The radiation exposure is typically 8–15 mSv for an abdominal CT, equivalent to about 2–4 years of natural background radiation. The clinical benefit of an accurate diagnosis almost always far outweighs the minimal radiation risk. CT is generally avoided in pregnancy unless medically essential. Discuss any concerns with our team.
The actual CT scanning time is very fast – typically 5–10 seconds per phase on our 128-slice scanner, with the total table time (including positioning and multiple phases if needed) usually 10–20 minutes. Including registration, preparation, cannula placement, and recovery, please plan for 30–45 minutes for your complete visit. This is significantly faster than MRI, making CT the preferred choice when speed matters in clinical situations.
The cost of CT Abdomen Scan at Usmanpura Imaging Centre is very competitive and affordable – among the most reasonable in Ahmedabad for 128-slice CT quality. Pricing differs between plain CT (without contrast) and contrast-enhanced CT (CECT Abdomen). We are empanelled with major health insurance companies, TPAs, and CGHS/ECHS. Please call +91 79 2756 1234 or WhatsApp us for the latest pricing, current offers, or to check your insurance coverage before booking.
A Plain CT Abdomen (NCCT) is done without contrast dye. It is the preferred choice for kidney stone detection (urolithiasis), trauma assessment, and when contrast is contraindicated. A Contrast-Enhanced CT Abdomen (CECT) uses IV iodinated contrast dye injected in timed phases to highlight blood vessels, liver lesions, tumors, and inflammatory changes. CECT provides significantly more diagnostic information for suspected cancers, infections, vascular pathology, and bowel conditions. Your referring doctor's prescription will specify which type you need.
If you have chronic kidney disease (CKD) or reduced kidney function, contrast dye can potentially worsen kidney function (contrast-induced nephropathy). Our radiologist will review your serum creatinine level before administering contrast. Patients on Metformin (a common diabetes medication) should stop it on the day of and for 48 hours after contrast CT, as per standard guidelines. In most cases where contrast is essential, we can administer adequate IV hydration and take precautions. Please inform us of these conditions when booking.
For contrast-enhanced CT Abdomen, fasting for 4–6 hours is recommended to minimize nausea associated with contrast injection and to improve image quality of bowel structures. For plain CT (e.g., non-contrast CT KUB for kidney stones), fasting is generally not required. You should stay well-hydrated by drinking water. Our team will provide specific preparation instructions based on your scan type when you book your appointment.
Usmanpura Imaging Centre provides same-day reports for all CT Abdomen Scans. After your scan, a senior abdominal radiologist reviews the images and prepares a detailed written report including organ-wise findings, measurements, and clinical impressions. Reports and digital images are delivered via WhatsApp and email the same day, typically within 2–4 hours. Printed hard-copy reports and image CDs are available at all 8 branches. For urgent clinical situations, we can expedite report delivery – please inform our team at the time of booking.
