Diagnostic Mammography

When should you get checked?

Mammography is a low-dose X-ray test that examines breast tissue for early signs of breast cancer — including lumps, calcifications, and structural changes — often before they can be felt by hand. At Usmanpura Imaging Centre, monthly breast self-examination combined with annual mammography and sonomammography offers the best chance of catching changes early. Early detection significantly improves the likelihood of a favourable treatment outcome. Book your mammography or sonomammography appointment at any of our branches across Ahmedabad and Gujarat.

Sonomammography

Who requires it?

Sonomammography (breast ultrasound) uses sound waves instead of X-rays to examine breast tissue, and is especially useful for younger women, those with dense breast tissue, or for further evaluating a lump found on a mammogram or physical exam. Monthly breast self-examination combined with yearly sonomammography helps in early detection — and early detection gives a far better chance of a favourable treatment outcome.

What is Mammography?

Mammography is a low-dose X-ray imaging test used to examine breast tissue for early signs of breast cancer — including lumps, calcifications, and structural changes — often before they can be felt during a physical exam. It remains the most widely used and clinically validated screening tool for early breast cancer detection. At Usmanpura Imaging Centre, digital mammography is often paired with sonomammography (breast ultrasound) for a more complete picture, performed by experienced radiologists with trained female technologists for patient comfort, and reported the same day.

Mammography vs Sonomammography

Two Complementary Breast Screening Tests

🩻 Mammography (X-Ray)
  • Uses low-dose X-rays
  • Primary screening tool for women 40+
  • Best for detecting calcifications
  • Brief breast compression required
  • BI-RADS scored report
  • Less effective in dense breast tissue
🔊 Sonomammography (Ultrasound)
  • Uses sound waves, no radiation
  • Ideal for younger women & dense tissue
  • Best for evaluating a specific lump
  • No compression — generally more comfortable
  • Often used alongside mammography
  • Real-time imaging of breast structures
Understanding Results

What Does Your BI-RADS Score Mean?

BI-RADS (Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System) is the standard scale radiologists use to categorise mammogram findings:

BI-RADS 1–2

Normal or benign findings. Routine annual screening recommended as usual.

BI-RADS 0 & 3

Needs additional imaging (0) or probably benign finding needing short-term follow-up (3).

BI-RADS 4–5

Suspicious finding warranting further investigation, typically a biopsy, as advised by your doctor.

Eligibility

Who Should Get a Mammography Screening?

🎂
Women Aged 40 and Above

Standard guidelines recommend annual or biennial screening mammograms starting at age 40

🧬
Family History of Breast Cancer

Women with a mother, sister, or close relative with breast cancer may need to start screening earlier

🔍
Anyone with a New Breast Lump

A newly felt lump, thickening, or change in breast shape warrants prompt evaluation

💧
Unusual Nipple Discharge or Changes

Spontaneous discharge, skin dimpling, or nipple retraction should be assessed by imaging

🧪
Genetic Risk Factors (BRCA1/BRCA2)

Women with known genetic mutations may be advised to begin screening as early as their 30s

📅
Due for Annual Follow-Up

Women already on a screening schedule should continue with yearly or biennial mammograms

Preparation

How to Prepare for Your Mammography Test

1
Skip Deodorant & Powder Avoid deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion on your breasts and underarms on the day of the test.
2
Best Timing Schedule the test about a week after your period, when breasts are usually less tender.
3
Wear a Two-Piece Outfit A separate top and bottom make it easier to change for the scan comfortably.
4
No Fasting Needed Eat and drink normally — there are no dietary restrictions before a mammogram.
5
Mention Implants or Surgery Inform the technologist about breast implants, previous surgery, or biopsies beforehand.
6
Bring Previous Reports Earlier mammogram or sonomammography reports help radiologists compare changes over time.
Awareness

Monthly Breast Self-Examination Matters Too

Screening tests work best alongside regular self-checks. A simple monthly routine helps you notice changes early between scans.

📅
Pick One Day Monthly

Choose the same day each month, ideally a few days after your period ends, to check consistently.

👀
Look & Feel

Check for changes in size, shape, skin texture, or any new lumps, thickening, or discharge.

📞
Report Promptly

If you notice any new change, consult your doctor promptly rather than waiting for your next scheduled scan.

Frequently Asked Questions — Mammography

Mammography is a low-dose X-ray imaging test used to examine breast tissue for early signs of breast cancer, including lumps, calcifications, and tissue changes — often before they can be felt during a physical exam. It is the most widely used and clinically validated tool for breast cancer screening and early detection.

Mammography uses low-dose X-rays to image breast tissue and is the primary screening tool, especially effective in women above 40 with less dense breast tissue. Sonomammography (breast ultrasound) uses sound waves and is often used as a complementary test for younger women, those with dense breast tissue, or to further evaluate a lump found on a mammogram or physical exam. Many doctors recommend both together for a more complete assessment.

Most guidelines recommend that women begin annual or biennial screening mammograms starting at age 40, or earlier if there is a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors. Women with a strong family history or genetic risk (such as BRCA mutations) may be advised to start screening as early as their 30s — a discussion with your doctor can help determine the right starting age for you.

Mammography involves brief compression of the breast between two plates to get a clear image, which can cause temporary discomfort or mild pressure for a few seconds per image. It is not typically described as painful, and any discomfort resolves immediately after the scan. Scheduling the test about a week after your period, when breasts are less tender, can help reduce discomfort.

For a mammogram: avoid using deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion on your breasts and underarms on the day of the test, as these can interfere with image clarity. Wear a two-piece outfit for convenience. If possible, schedule the test a week after your menstrual period when breasts are less tender. Bring any previous mammogram or breast imaging reports for comparison.

Most guidelines recommend annual or biennial (every 1-2 years) screening mammograms for women aged 40 and above. Women with higher risk factors, such as a family history of breast cancer, may need more frequent screening as advised by their doctor. Monthly breast self-examination is also recommended for all women regardless of age.

BI-RADS (Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System) is a standardised scoring system radiologists use to categorise mammogram findings:

  • BI-RADS 0: Incomplete — needs additional imaging
  • BI-RADS 1–2: Normal or benign findings
  • BI-RADS 3: Probably benign — short-term follow-up suggested
  • BI-RADS 4–5: Suspicious — biopsy typically recommended
  • BI-RADS 6: Known biopsy-proven malignancy

Yes, modern digital mammography is very safe. It uses a low dose of radiation — typically around 0.4 millisieverts per screening, comparable to about seven weeks of natural background radiation exposure. The benefit of early breast cancer detection significantly outweighs this minimal radiation risk for most women in the recommended screening age group.

Usmanpura Imaging Centre offers digital mammography and sonomammography across its branches in Ahmedabad (Usmanpura, Maninagar, Satellite, Bapunagar, Naroda, Nikol, Sabarmati, Vadaj, Juhapura), as well as Gandhinagar, Patan, Nadiad, Anand, Rajkot, and Morbi, with experienced radiologists, female technologists, and same-day reporting.
