DEXA Scan in Ahmedabad

Usmanpura Imaging Centre — Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Nadiad, Rajkot, Anand

A DEXA scan (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry — also written as DXA) is the gold standard test for measuring Bone Mineral Density (BMD). It uses two low-energy X-ray beams to assess the density of your bones — primarily the lumbar spine, hip, and forearm — and generates a T-score that classifies your bone health as normal, osteopenic, or osteoporotic. Beyond bone density, a full-body DEXA scan also accurately measures body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, and visceral fat distribution, making it one of the most comprehensive preventive health scans available. At Usmanpura Imaging Centre, our DEXA scans are performed on calibrated machines with same-day report delivery.

What DEXA Measures

Two Powerful Tests in One Scan

🦴 Bone Density Test (BMD)
  • Lumbar spine (L1–L4) bone density
  • Hip / femoral neck bone density
  • Forearm (radius) bone density
  • T-score — diagnosis of osteoporosis
  • Z-score — age-matched comparison
  • 10-year fracture risk (FRAX score)
  • Treatment monitoring over time
⚖️ Body Composition Analysis
  • Total body fat percentage
  • Visceral (abdominal) fat level
  • Regional fat distribution (arms, legs, trunk)
  • Lean muscle mass per limb
  • Android / Gynoid fat ratio
  • Bone mineral content (total body)
  • Used for obesity, sarcopenia, athlete monitoring
Understanding Results

What Does Your T-Score Mean?

The T-score compares your bone density with that of a healthy young adult of the same sex. Here's how to read it:

-1.0 or above
Normal

Bone density is within the healthy range. Continue with calcium, Vitamin D, and regular exercise to maintain bone strength.

-1.0 to -2.5
Osteopenia

Low bone density — not yet osteoporosis but a warning sign. Lifestyle changes, supplements, and follow-up DEXA in 1–2 years recommended.

-2.5 or below
Osteoporosis

Significant bone loss — high fracture risk. Medical treatment required. Consult your doctor for appropriate medication and bone protection.

Eligibility

Who Should Get a DEXA Scan?

👩
Women above 50 (Post-menopausal)

Oestrogen drop after menopause accelerates bone loss — DEXA is the essential baseline test

👴
Men above 65 years

Age-related bone loss in men increases after 65 — regular BMD monitoring is recommended

💊
Long-term Steroid Users

Corticosteroids (prednisone, dexamethasone) significantly reduce bone density over time

🦴
History of Fractures from Minor Falls

A fragility fracture is a red flag for underlying osteoporosis — immediate DEXA is essential

🦋
Thyroid / Parathyroid Disease

Hyperthyroidism and hyperparathyroidism both cause accelerated bone turnover and density loss

🫘
Kidney Disease / Dialysis

Chronic kidney disease causes renal osteodystrophy — regular bone density monitoring is crucial

⚖️
Low Body Weight / Malnutrition

BMI below 19 or significant weight loss is a risk factor for low bone density

🏃
Athletes & Body Composition Assessment

Full-body DEXA is the most accurate tool for tracking muscle mass, fat %, and bone health in athletes

Preparation

How to Prepare for Your DEXA Scan

1
No Fasting Required Eat and drink normally before your DEXA scan. There are no dietary restrictions.
2
Stop Calcium Supplements Do not take calcium supplements or antacids for 24 hours before the scan, as they can interfere with results.
3
Metal-Free Clothing Wear loose, comfortable clothes without metal zips, buttons, or underwire bras. A gown is available at the centre.
4
Recent Contrast Tests If you've had a barium X-ray, contrast CT, or nuclear medicine scan in the past 7 days, inform the technician before your scan.
5
Pregnancy Inform the centre if you are pregnant or suspect pregnancy. DEXA involves low-dose X-ray and is generally avoided during pregnancy.
6
Bring Previous Reports Earlier DEXA scan reports are very valuable for comparison and trend analysis. Please bring them along.

Everything You Need to Know About DEXA Scan

Bone density testing, osteoporosis diagnosis, T-score interpretation, body composition analysis — all explained with costs, FAQs, and who needs it

Frequently Asked Questions — DEXA Scan

A DEXA scan (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the gold standard test for measuring Bone Mineral Density (BMD). It uses two low-dose X-ray beams to assess bone strength at the spine, hip, and forearm. It is primarily done to diagnose osteoporosis and osteopenia, assess fracture risk, and monitor response to treatment. It also serves as the most accurate body composition test, measuring fat percentage and muscle mass.

A DEXA scan is recommended for women above 50 years (especially post-menopausal), men above 65 years, anyone with a history of fractures from minor falls, patients on long-term steroids or other bone-affecting medications, people with low body weight or malnutrition, those with thyroid or kidney disease, and individuals with a family history of osteoporosis.

The T-score compares your bone density with a healthy 30-year-old of the same sex:

  • T-score -1.0 or above → Normal — healthy bone density
  • T-score -1.0 to -2.5 → Osteopenia — low bone density; lifestyle changes recommended
  • T-score -2.5 or below → Osteoporosis — significantly weakened bones; medical treatment required

The Z-score compares your density with age-matched peers and is used for younger patients and children.

Yes, DEXA scan is extremely safe. The radiation dose is only 1–10 microsieverts (μSv) — this is:

  • Less than one day of natural background radiation
  • Far less than a chest X-ray (100 μSv)
  • Much less than a CT scan (1,000–10,000 μSv)

It is safe for most adults including elderly patients. It is generally avoided during pregnancy due to precaution, even though the dose is very low.

DEXA scan cost in Ahmedabad varies by type:

  • Spine + Hip BMD (standard bone density): ₹1,200 – ₹1,800
  • Full body DEXA (bone + body composition): ₹1,800 – ₹2,500
  • Forearm DEXA (wrist bone density): ₹800 – ₹1,500

Feature
Osteopenia
Osteoporosis
T-Score
-1.0 to -2.5
-2.5 or below
Bone Condition
Low bone density
Severely weakened bones
Fracture Risk
Mild to moderate
High — even minor falls
Treatment
Lifestyle + supplements
Medication + monitoring

Both conditions are detected by DEXA scan. Early detection at osteopenia stage allows intervention before osteoporosis develops.

Yes — whole-body DEXA is one of the most accurate body composition tests available. It measures:

  • Total body fat percentage
  • Visceral (deep abdominal) fat — associated with heart disease and diabetes risk
  • Lean muscle mass in each limb separately
  • Android/Gynoid fat ratio (apple vs pear body shape)
  • Bone mineral content (total)

It is more accurate than BMI, skinfold calipers, or bioimpedance (BIA) scales. Used by athletes, bariatric care teams, endocrinologists, and fitness professionals.

  • Normal bone density: Every 2–3 years for high-risk patients (menopausal women, steroid users)
  • Osteopenia: Every 1–2 years to monitor progression
  • On osteoporosis treatment: Every 1–2 years to assess treatment response
  • Body composition tracking: Every 3–6 months for athletes or weight management programmes

Bring your previous DEXA report when repeating — direct comparison of BMD values over time is the most clinically useful part of follow-up scans.

Yes. At Usmanpura Imaging Centre you can book a DEXA scan without a prescription for preventive screening or body composition assessment. Our radiologists provide a comprehensive report with T-score, Z-score, and clinical interpretation. A prescription helps with insurance reimbursement.
